Process development

BIOPOLIS, S.L. designs and develops customized production processes to cater to customer needs. We set up, develop and improve both upstream and downstream stages of microbial production processing.

Production stages are performed sequentially, following fermentation and downstream processing and incorporating various analytical methods. To provide suitable scale-up facilities and greater flexibility, our on-site fermentation bioreactors range from 3 ml to 3000 l industrial bioreactors, with numerous intermediate sizes (1.5, 2.5, 5, 20 and 300 l).

BIOPOLIS, S.L. has on-site process development facilities that ensure reliable and efficient monitoring while controlling time and cost. We provide consistent and reproducible results as well as focusing on customer needs.

Upstream process development

BIOPOLIS, S.L. provides a wide range of services related to the optimization of upstream processes, including the following:

  • Medium evaluation and optimization.
  • Fermentation process development.
  • Characterization and optimization of culture media (batch, chemostat, perfusion).
  • Scale-up / Scale-down.
  • Cost-benefit analysis and risk assessment for various types of cell-culture processes.

Downstream process development

BIOPOLIS, S.L. has the following on-site facilities for downstream process development:

  • Separation and centrifugation equipment up to 1,200 l/h.
  • Micro and ultra-filtration, diafiltration.
  • Pilot homogenizer (up to 1,000 bar, 80 l/h).
  • FPLC equipment:
    • Akta Explorer (100 ml/minute).
    • Akta Pilot (800ml/minute).
    • IEX chromatographer (ion exchange), IMAC (Immobilized Metal Ion Affinity Chromatography), HIC (Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography), SEC (Size Exclusion Chromatography) and affinity chromatog.
    • Columns up to 30 l.
  • HPLC (analytical and semi preparative).
